M

Henning Andersen, Master of Wind Orca

"A good leader is one, who can get the team to reach the set targets and who understands that without the individual, the team wouldn’t work."

What do you do as Master of Wind Orca?

I have the overall command of the vessel and the responsibility for the safety of the vessel and the crew. Most of my time is spent on communication with the Headquarters in Copenhagen and coordination between the departments and the client onboard.

What is the best part about working offshore?

I like that I can be fully present in my life wherever I am. When I am offshore, I can have full focus on the job because I don’t have to worry about anything else like, cooking, cleaning, picking up kids from school and all this. When I am home, I can use all my energy on my family because I know Wind Orca is in good hands.

What motivates you when you wake up in the morning?

Ever since I started in this industry, I have had the feeling that I was part of something right. I remember first time we sailed away from a location, and I was standing on the deck looking back at these impressive turbines.  I felt really proud. It has always given me a good feeling not only transporting goods from A to B, but actually building something that serves an honest purpose.

After having been in the industry for more than a decade, I still have that feeling. It is not so much about finishing one turbine, but more about optimizing the cooperation and the processes onboard to ensure the vessel operates efficiently and gets the projects completed safely and as fast as possible.

When have you felt most proud of your work?

I feel proud when the team accomplishes something that before would be considered impossible. Right now, the future looks bright, and I don’t think this would be possible without the great work and the many successful projects, we have done in the past 11 years.

Can you remember a specific challenge you have faced, and how you came across it?

When we did the Aberdeen project we were faced with very difficult soil conditions, and there were doubts whether it would be possible to jack up. At one location it took us two days to get the legs up. But we did it! Thanks to great team work and a high level of geotechnical expertise. This project showed our clients that we are not afraid to handle even the most challenging conditions.

What is a good leader in your opinion?

A good leader is one, who can get the team to reach the set targets and who understands that without the individual, the team wouldn’t work.
