M

Matthew Offredy

I gained my ETO CoC and a Foundation Degree in Marine Electronic and Electrical Engineering as part of my 3-year cadetship.

Once qualified, I started as a Junior ETO in Swire Pacific Offshore. To continue my development and further acquisition of skills and knowledge, I accompanied experienced ETOs on the companies supply and anchor handling vessels.

A year later, I was promoted to an ETO, spending most of my time in West Africa on vessels requiring additional technical assistance. Finally, 4 years ago, I transferred to the Wind Orca and utilized my spare time to complete a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering.

Questions?

When I’m at work I use my skills to …?

Work closely with, learn from, and encourage my colleagues. As an ETO department, we have the most dynamic, diverse, and decentralised role on board. We're always in high demand, constantly interacting with others and providing the assistance to allow everyone to maintain our exceptionally technically complex vessel.

Additionally, the ability to work under pressure while maintaining a safe and efficient working environment is of paramount importance for an ETO to resolve the potentially show-stopping issues we face.

I take a step forward when I …

Communicate and collaborate! Every task ETOs undertake requires working closely with others. It is common to fix systems we only touch when they break. If we can communicate and extract information from the system’s operators, we can resolve issues quickly and safely. Furthermore, we are a diverse department with a vast inventory of skills and experience, and playing with others’ strengths, allows the formation of incredible things.

In the future my main focus will be …?

Continuing to improve both myself and those around me.

When I’m off work, I like to …?

Visit the gym, and play table tennis and darts, for which there is a pretty competitive atmosphere on board. At home, I take a couple of days to wind down with family and friends – and I love to spend time undertaking a myriad of activities. This includes everything from paddleboarding to hill and country walks, drone flying, and cycling.
